Birmingham Regatta 2017
First Event Win for Gwil and Matt!
A number of crews made the journey to a rather chilly and breezy reservoir in Edgbaston on 22nd April. Many thanks to Neil for towing the trailer at such an unearthly hour. The event was a new format for us with crews rowing in divisions on a round robin basis rather than the knockout format of most regattas. This was very hard on the crews as they had to boat and remain on the water for their entire division often rowing almost back to back for up to 3 races. Our rowers coped extremely well and all gave 100%. It was almost as difficult for us on the bank trying to work out the complex scoring..
Poppy Ranner started us off with the early slot and having battled with injury over recent months was unfortunate to flare a knee injury during her first race meaning she had to pull out of the remainder of her races. We all hope she recovers quickly.
Lou and Tom raced as a mixed double with some of their races being against all male crews. They did very well considering they have only rowed together a couple of times.
The girls J14 quad of Ellie N, Rosie, Abigail and Poppy S, coxed by Evie had one of the toughest runs where they won 2 out of 3 races resulting in being placed 2nd and they were only a few seconds off the time of the overall winners in their category. Very well done girls!
Alex Hunter bravely went solo to compete in the single sculls rowing a year up. He put in a fantastic effort, well done Alex.
Alex's big brother Tom also competed in a single and achieved one easy win before being beaten by an extremely good opponent in his final race.
Gwil and Matt finished the day in style for us with 3 good wins to receive their first event win as a double. A well deserved win after all their hard work over the winter. The traditional dunking in the river for a first win was completed back at the club!
